Arenal Volcano - It is one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica. It's located 4 hours north from Tamarindo in the La Fortuna area. The volcano is famous for its nightly lava discharges and eruptions and the area nigh for its hot springs, zip-lines, waterfalls and rainforest. Many visitors combine a short stay in Arenal with a longer stay in Tamarindo.

This is what you can do: If you arrive to either of the 2 international airports (San Jose or Liberia), find your way to Tamarindo. Then you have severa ways to get to Arenal:

1-Private tour: This type of tour includes transportation and bilingual guide, with the advantage that you can customize the tour, choosing only the activities you would like to do. This can also be a one day trip or an overnight stay.

2-Group Tour: This is shared tour and a one day trip. Leaving your Tamarindo resort early in the morning, you'll enjoy the landscapes that surround Lake Arenal before arriving at Coter Forest Reserve. There, you'll take a hike with a naturalist guide who will offer an introduction to the natural forest. After the walk, lunch at the Ecolodge. In the afternoon, you will continue to the Tabacon Hot Springs, where you can bathe in the termal waters and contemplate the frequent eruptions of the volcano. Early in the evening you'll start heading back to Tamarindo.

3-Shuttle: You can also take one of the daily shuttles that go from Tamarindo to Arenal. The cost is around $35/person. 4-Car rental: With a map or a GPS you should be able to drive to Arenal with no trouble. It's a 4 hour drive.
