Costa Rica has a traditional "Dry" Season that generally starts in December and continues through April. This is particularly true in the Guanacaste province on the North Pacific Gold Coast, where virtually no rain will fall during this period. Because this corresponds with winter in the northern hemisphere, these months have evolved into the "High Season" for visitors. Daily sunshine is virtually guarranteed during this period. April is the hottest month of the year.

Starting in May, the regular showers and periods of rainy days return to the Guanacaste province, and the dramatic Dry Season look of the country explodes into lush vegetation transforming into a tropical paradise. The showers usually do not start until late afternoon or evening, leaving much of the day for beach and other outdoor activities. The clouds with the showers can make for the most stunning sunsets you may see anywhere. |
October is the month for those who truly enjoy rain and the coolest temperatures of Costa Rica. (The lows in Guanacaste rarely are below 70 degrees) During October, many of the local businesses, that work hard all year serving visitors, can close for their own vacations. It can be rainy 5 of 7 days each week. Costa Rica needs this weather to recharge its natural lakes and rivers, which provide 80% of the country's power through hydroelectric installations. |
